We are very fortunate to have one of the most beautiful, untouched beaches in the world on our doorstep. Stretching for almost 20km from De Kelders to Hermanus, Die Plaat is a spectacular white stretch of un-spoilt sand, – almost always deserted, and with magical views out across Walker Bay, and up to the dunes and hills behind De Kelders.
Exploring this area on Fat Bikes is a new, exhilarating way of exploring this untamed De Kelders coastline. Fatbike Tours, under the guidance of the amicable and very knowledgeable Dave, operates along the stunning De Kelders cliffs and beach.
Trying out these truly “FAT” bikes on the sand is a great experience! The Fat Bikes are designed for this terrain, and make it easier and lots of fun to ride on the beaches and dunes. The tour explores the stunning Walker Bay Nature Reserve along a 4×4 trail, and then moves onto the sandy beach. Groups are small, and everyone’s fitness and ability is taken into account. The group decides how far they want to go, and this will depend on comfort as well as weather and beach conditions. Along the ride there are plenty of opportunities to stop, rest and take photos and during whale watching season, (July – November), to enjoy the whales that come close to shore.
This is a great way to explore our special coastline and to enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty of De Kelders.
