Wining & Dining

Food is such an enjoyable part of being on holiday and we serve a taste bud-tingling breakfast here at Cliff Lodge. We also have some favourite restaurants that we recommend to our guests for lunch and dinner, some of these on excellent wine farms in the area.  Here’s a list of some of our preferred restaurants and wine farms in De Kelders, Gansbaai, Stanford and the Overberg region.

De Kelders

Kloeks @ Home Restaurant

Kloeks at Home restaurant in De Kelders Gansbaai

Friendly and intimate restaurant, Kloeks @ Home, is within walking distance of Cliff Lodge, and offers a small starter, main and dessert menu, with a varying selection of seasonal fare. A few of our guests claim to have enjoyed the best steak they’ve ever eaten at Kloeks – we have no doubt! Kloeks is also well supplied with seafood from the fishing boats of Gansbaai. We recommend Kloeks to our guests because they focus on perfecting a few dishes, as opposed to a menu groaning under the weight of too much choice – plus they have loads of style and charm.

Benguela Restaurant

The combination of a passion for food and wine, excellent attention to detail and impeccable personalised service makes this a refined and unique dining experience. Jonathan and Handre welcome guests into their beautiful home in De Kelders, and invite you to make new friends at their lavish 16-seater Chef’s Table as you enjoy a wonderful five-course set menu paired with fine wines, followed by handmade truffles, espresso and Cognac. The fun-filled, elegant feast at Benguela will be one you will always remember. Booking is essential.

De Kelders Private House

Food at De Kelders Private House restaurant De KeldersNeil Stemmet is the amiable owner and host at De Kelders Private House where he prepares a chef’s menu every night exclusively for his guests and ours. The décor is beautiful and classy, with thoughtfully chosen music and excellent home cooked meals made with fresh produce from local suppliers. The wine list is a careful selection of the finest wines from the Walker Bay region and reflects the class and elegance of De Kelders Private House.  Vegetarians are well catered for.

Coffee on the Rocks

Coffee on the Rocks, as the name suggests, is a café restaurant perched on the rocks at De Kelders, overlooking Walker Bay. Gayle serves lunch, light meals and delicious cakes. Everything is fresh and there are blackboard specials every day. Comfortable and casual, with friendly service and a fantastic view.

Thyme at Rosemary's Restaurant

Thyme at Rosemary restaurant in GansbaaiThyme at Rosemary’s Restaurant in Gansbaai is a local favourite.  Rosemary serves a good selection of traditional South African cooking on her extensive menu. We highly recommend the bobotie and hearty oxtail stew, but you’ll find lighter options on the menu, which can be enjoyed in their pretty garden setting at lunch time.

Blue Goose Restaurant

Blue Goose restaurant in Gansbaai serves fresh, locally sourced seafood, South African beef and lamb and unique regional wines in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Springfontein Eats Restaurant @ Springfontein wine estate

Springfontein Eats’ restaurant on Springfontein Wine Estate in Stanford offers a slow-food menu using ingredients sourced from their farm’s gardens and other local produce. Chef Jürgen Schneider has held a Michelin star for over 18 years and with his wife Susan they ran a successful restaurant in Germany. Now, having moved their lives to South Africa, they have established Springfontein Eats as a gastronomic destination with Michelin star quality.

The Springfontein Wine Barn offers wine tastings of the excellent Springfontein wines, and light meals in a lovely setting overlooking the lagoon and mountains.

The Manor House Restaurant

The Manor House Restaurant at Stanford Valley serves delicious lunches and dinners in a beautiful setting overlooking the breath-taking Stanford mountains. The food is modern bistro soul food, and the service is always friendly and warm. The Manor House is one of our favourite places for lunch.

The Tasting room @ Stanford Hills Wine Farm

The Tasting Room at Stanford Hills near De Kelders Gansbaai South AfricaStanford Hills, is a charming, family run boutique wine farm just outside the village of Stanford where our guests enjoy wine tastings and their relaxed lunch venue – The Tasting Room. Their Jackson’s Pinotage garners consistently high praise among the wine set, and their Methode Cap Classique is one of our favourites. 

The Tasting Room Restaurant opens onto lily-jewelled dams and expansive views of the mountains, and has a reputation for laid back fun, with the emphasis on fresh and inventive food.

RakA Wines - winery

Raka Winery near StanfordRaka Wines is 17 kilometres from Stanford nestled in the Kleinrivier Mountains and its slopes provide a variety of aspects and soil types to produce a wide range of award-winning wines to sample at their cellar. They are open for wine tasting on weekdays.  Make sure you taste the award-winning Biography Shiraz, one of our favourites.

The Black Oystercatcher Restaurant @ Black Oystercatcher Wine Estate

The Black Oyster Catcher Restaurant is based at a boutique wine estate, off the beaten track along the Elim road. Drawing their inspiration from seasonal availability, they serve fresh produce grown in the garden, paired with their lovely wines in a relaxed country atmosphere. The setting is beautiful – looking out over the wetlands and across the mountains, making this our favourite lunch stop on the way to Cape Agulhas.

Harbour Rock Restaurant

The Harbour Rock in Hermanus is a spectacularly situated restaurant, positioned ‘on the rocks’ inside the Hermanus Harbour. We recommend their sushi, and their beautifully prepared lunch dishes, which range from duck a l’orange, to slow-cooked lamb and grilled calamari. Watch the waves crash beneath you as you sip on crisp white wine with your sashimi, or a bottle of red with your fillet and pepper sauce.

The Hermanus Wine Route

The Hermanus Wine Route is a five-minute drive from the centre of Hermanus and threads its way along the R320 in the aptly named Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (Heaven-and-Earth Valley). The valley is protected from the sea breezes but benefits from the moist air and plentiful sunshine, making it seem like a little slice of ‘heaven’.

There are 15 good wine farms, starting with Hermanuspietersfontein, winding past top-rated Bouchard Finlayson and Hamilton Russell, and ending in a cluster that includes Ataraxia, Creation Wines and Domaine des Dieux. You can enjoy great wine-tasting at the estates, and some estates also arrange superb food-and-wine pairings, where you can explore how different flavours enhance each other. Creation Wines has our favourite unusual pairings: chocolate and wine pairing, a small plate pairing, and even a non-alcoholic tea and food pairing.
